Maker Faire is an event originally created by Make magazine to “celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset”. In 2017, over 190 independently-produced “Mini Maker Faires” plus over 30 larger-scale Faires took place around the world, including in Tokyo, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, Istanbul, Dubai, Adelaide, Santo Domingo, Ottawa, Bengaluru, many places in Europe including Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Odessa and Moscow, a handful of sites in the UK and in towns and cities all over the USA. 200,000 people now annually attend the two flagship Faires in the Bay Area and New York.
These events are part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new – an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists and students. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made, to share what they have learned, and to co-create the future.
As a highly creative city that is becoming internationally celebrated for multimedia, new media art, design and innovation, Montreal deserves an event like this. The Concordia location puts the Faire action in the center of the city, in an area that is teeming with students, influencers, opinion leaders, social media mavericks and future-makers. For two very full days, the event will take over many of Concordia’s premium spaces including the atrium of the Engineering and Visual Arts (EV) complex on the corner of Guy and Ste. Catherine’s street. The atrium is a high profile public space, with direct access from the metro and with floor to ceiling windows that make events highly visible from the street.
We will be picking an exciting group of exhibitors from the applicant pool, focusing on a stimulating mixture of emerging and more established makers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs and artists working in areas as diverse as robotics, bio and green tech, hacking, VR, fashion, and towards sustainable futures: from tools to vehicles, and from food to shelters.
Maker Faire draws a unique audience that appeals to the interest of high-tech corporations, software, engineering, design and architecture companies, arts and graphics organizations, universities, start-up companies and brands looking to connect with tomorrow’s themes and with leading makers and influencers.
